Iconic American rock band Aerosmith made headlines recently in Uruguay, where they were performing a concert at Montevideo’s Centenario Stadium last Wednesday.
During an official visit with the President José Mujica, singer Steve Tyler sang the praises of the Uruguayan leader, calling him “one of the best presidents of the Americas” and expressing a belief that more world leaders should follow his example.
President Mujica is widely considered to be the world’s poorest president, and donates most of his own income to a program known as Plan Juntos (or Plan Together), that provides free homes and medical care to the country’s poverty-stricken residents.
“He gives 70 percent of his salary for people’s homes. Here in this small country, Uruguay, I think he’s doing it the right way, grass roots and we believe in that,” Tyler said in an interview.
The band made an official request to meet with President Mujica, and visited with him for over two hours. Tyler gifted the president with a signed electric guitar.
