Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor brought in 2014 by leading the 60-second countdown to the new year in Times Square.
Also of note on New Year’s Eve, Sotomayor blocked a requirement that throws President Obama‘s healthcare law off course temporarily. Her ruling blocked a requirement that organizations who have religious affiliations be mandated to provide health insurance that includes forms of birth control.
Sotomayor’s temporary ruling has once again sparked the controversial nature of Obama’s signature legislation, the Affordable Care Act. Many have opposed the contraceptive coverage aspect of Obamacare, specifically employers who have a religious objection to contraception.
The Obama administration has until Friday to respond to the ruling. The administration has repeatedly defended their stance on the birth control mandate made in the Affordable Care Act. White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said last month: “The president believes that no one, including the government or for-profit corporations, should be able to dictate those decisions to women”.
