Alfonso Cuaron won for best director at the 2014 Golden Globes for his film “Gravity”, a sci-fi thriller about an astronaut stranded in space. It was Cuaron’s first nomination and first Golden Globe win.

It took the director four years to write the film, along with his son Jonas. The nomination for best director is considered to be more prestigious than that of best picture, because the category contains fewer nominees.

Cuaron defeated directors Steve McQueen, Paul Greengrass, Alexander Payne and David O. Russell, who were also nominated. “Gravity” was also nominated for Best Picture – Drama, Best Actress – Drama (Sandra Bullock) and Best Score (Steven Price).
