While President Obama has previously expressed support for the idea of Puerto Rico’s statehood, it’s not entirely clear if the process will be a smooth one. 61% of the constituency of Puerto Rico has voted in favor of statehood, while 33% support so-called “free association” (which would give them more autonomy).

In addition to this vote for statehood, Puerto Rico also voted in favor of ousting Gov. Luis Fortuno in favor of Alejandro Garcia Padilla. Padilla’s party wants to retain Puerto Rico’s commonwealth status.
