According to The Huffington Post, Martin testified before the United Nations at a recent conference against homophobia. While attitudes about homosexuality have become more progressive in much of Europe and the Americas, there are still laws on the books in Africa & Asia that criminalize homosexuality…and this, said Martin to the impaneled delegates, gives him cause for concern because of how he grew up. “For many years, I lived in fear … because I was hating myself because I grew up listening to a very crooked concept: `You’re gay. You belong in hell,'” he said.
The UN has called upon the 76 countries who criminalize homosexuality to reconsider their stance on the laws.
