Reuters is reporting that Castro, 81, is starting his second term immediately so he can be free to retire when the term ends in 2018. He made the announcement of his retirement in a nationally broadcast speech shortly after the Cuban National Assembly elected him to a second five-year term. Though there’s no definitive successor to the Castro regime, a few possibilities are being bandied about, including Mercedes López Acea, 48, first secretary of the Havana communist party, and Salvador Valdes Mesa, 64, head of the official labor federation.
